What is Pigmentation?

Pigmentation refers to the coloring of the skin caused by the deposition of melanin, a pigment produced by melanocytes. Melanin protects our skin from damage by sunlight, but when it is produced unevenly, it can lead to hyperpigmentation. This condition manifests as dark spots or patches that stand out from the surrounding skin. Pigmentation can occur on any part of the body, but it is most commonly seen on the face, hands, and other areas frequently exposed to the sun.

Cause of Skin Pigmentation

  • Sun Exposure: Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
  • Hormonal Changes: Pregnancy, birth control pills, or hormonal therapy.
  • Genetics: Family history of pigmentation issues.
  • Inflammation and Skin Trauma: Acne, injuries, or surgeries.
  • Age: Changes in melanin distribution as you age.
  • Medications and Chemicals: Certain drugs and chemicals.

Symptoms of Skin Pigmentation

The symptoms of skin pigmentation vary depending on the type and cause. Common symptoms include:

  • Dark spots or patches on the skin
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Areas of discoloration that may range from light brown to black
  • Spots that appear on sun-exposed areas such as the face, hands, and shoulders

Types of Pigmentation

There are several types of hyperpigmentation, the common ones being melasma, sunspots, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Melasma: Melasma is typically triggered by hormonal changes, often occurring during pregnancy. This type of hyperpigmentation can develop on various parts of the body but is most frequently found on the face and stomach.

Birthmarks: Birthmarks are pigmented areas present at birth or shortly afterward. They can vary in size, shape, and color, and are caused by genetic and environmental factors.

Sunspots: Also known as liver spots or solar lentigines, sunspots are quite common. They result from prolonged sun exposure and generally manifest as spots on sun-exposed areas like the face and hands.

Freckles: Freckles are small, flat, brown spots that usually appear on sun-exposed skin, such as the face and arms. They are more common in individuals with fair skin and are often hereditary.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: This type occurs due to skin injury or inflammation. A prevalent cause is acne, which can leave dark spots on the skin after the inflammation subsides.

Mirage Aesthetic offers a Pigmentation treatment using FDA-approved advanced technology. It uses powerful bursts of energy to remove pigmentation, acne scars, age spots, wrinkles, fine lines, freckles, and sunburn spots, and improve issues with broken capillaries. This treatment is highly effective, with minimal downtime and no side effects, unlike other laser treatments.

Pigmentation Removal Treatment Options

The most effective treatment for hyperpigmentation varies depending on its underlying cause. To address this condition effectively, Mirage Aesthetic will first diagnose and treat any root causes. Before recommending specific pigmentation removal treatments, we consider several factors:

  • Your skin tone
  • The extent to which hyperpigmentation has affected the layers of your skin
  • Any triggers or risk factors associated with your hyperpigmentation

There are various treatment options in the market to tackle pigmentation removal:

Laser Treatments

Laser treatments are popular for their precision in targeting pigmented areas. These lasers break down the melanin into smaller particles, which are then naturally eliminated by the body.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

IPL uses broad-spectrum light to target pigmentation in the skin. It is effective for treating sunspots, age spots, and freckles by delivering light energy that is absorbed by the pigmented areas.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels involve applying a chemical solution to the skin, which causes it to exfoliate and peel off. This process removes the top layer of skin, reducing pigmentation and promoting the growth of new, evenly-toned skin.

Topical Creams

Topical creams containing ingredients like hydroquinone, tretinoin, and corticosteroids can lighten hyperpigmentation. These creams work by inhibiting melanin production and promoting cell turnover.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a mechanical exfoliation technique that removes the outermost layer of dead skin cells. It helps reduce pigmentation by promoting the growth of new skin cells and improving skin texture.

Other than doing pigmentation treatments as one of the options to remove pigmentation, home care is equally important as well.  Home care also includes using sunscreen. Sunscreen is the single most important factor in improving most causes of hyperpigmentation. Use sunscreen daily and reapply it every 2 hours if you’re out in the sun — more frequently if you’re sweating or swimming. Look for:

  • a physical blocking sunscreen, preferably with zinc oxide as the main active ingredient
  • at least an SPF 30 to 50 and PA+++ to protect against Ultra Violet Rays (UVA & UVB)
  • broad spectrum coverage
  • Protect yourself with a hat, sunglasses and long sleeve shirts. Use an umbrella and stay in the shade where possible

Disclaimer: Results from the treatment above may vary depending upon the individual and other various factors – including your age, gender, skin type and condition, use of other products used, health history, lifestyle, diet and others.
